I guess for a woman there’s always DaiBiJin as well. I am curious as to how the hell this word got in the Japanese vocabulary. The fact it is spelled in katakana would suggest it came from a foreign word, but what word that sounds like “deb” means fat? Americans have a “deb” term in street slang that is short for debutante, and I suppose perhaps Japanese saw American debutantes as decadent chublings.

One of the reasons it always catches my ear is that one of my high school crushes was a chubby gal named Debbie. It must be really odd to be a fat girl named Debbie and travel in Japan, like, “How the hell do they all know my name??!!!”

I was Google-ing the word “debu”, and bumped to this site..

and hey Debu-chan, I used to be a Debu too.. as for me its nothing to be ashamed, maybe because I’m no one but foreigner? so its not a big deal for me.. anyway i’m not a Debu anymore

“Debu” may not be considered nice, but most people don’t consider “fat” nice, so they end up using codewords like “bbw”, “curvy”, “plump”, “heavy”, etc in place of “fat”. As a result, I fell in love with the word “debu”, and had to have it for my SN on LJ. ^_^ I’m trying to get in the habit of watermarking my pics with it. I’m a proud Debu-chan! (Well, in the sense of I see no sense in being ashamed or hating my looks. I do hate the health problems. **emo frown**)
