I guess for a woman there's always DaiBiJin as well. I am curious as to how the hell this word got in the Japanese vocabulary. The fact it is spelled in katakana would suggest it came from a foreign word, but what word that sounds like "deb" means fat? Americans have a "deb" term in street slang that is short for debutante, and I suppose perhaps Japanese saw American debutantes as decadent chublings.

One of the reasons it always catches my ear is that one of my high school crushes was a chubby gal named Debbie. It must be really odd to be a fat girl named Debbie and travel in Japan, like, "How the hell do they all know my name??!!!"

I was Google-ing the word "debu", and bumped to this site..

and hey Debu-chan, I used to be a Debu too.. as for me its nothing to be ashamed, maybe because I'm no one but foreigner? so its not a big deal for me.. anyway i'm not a Debu anymore :)

:P did he say, "patsu pastu" at the end?

Love your show!

This reminds me of me and my buddy toshi.. We'd mix and say all sorts of stuff just for fun.
Saying stuff like:
"Taco Beru no riyori wa boku wo shiawase ni suru yo na"

I'm definitely bookmarking this site!

Hi Rich!
I stumbled on your site googling for funny japanese sayings, and am SO AMUSED. A little sad that the idea train halted - but if you're still open for submissions I can give it a go! Also, your podcasts have inspired a little comic thing, so I hope you don't mind :) Credits to you and your son, of course.

I think you should keep him in touch with both english and japanese( and why not a third language?) because that's going to give him a lot of advantage in the future, you know. that's all, thanks for your work ,it makes me laugh every time.

"Debu" may not be considered nice, but most people don't consider "fat" nice, so they end up using codewords like "bbw", "curvy", "plump", "heavy", etc in place of "fat". As a result, I fell in love with the word "debu", and had to have it for my SN on LJ. ^_^ I'm trying to get in the habit of watermarking my pics with it. I'm a proud Debu-chan! (Well, in the sense of I see no sense in being ashamed or hating my looks. I do hate the health problems. **emo frown**)

I wouldn't mind seeing an updated version of this list. I just found this site recently and I think it's awesome. I hope Canada will be moving up the ranks shortly.

Also, check out Google Analytics - I use it and it is a lot more robust than Firestats seems to be. Personal choice though ^_^

A sneeze was the perfect end to the booger series! I'm going to have to practice really, really, really hard to send an mp3 of myself saying one of these phrases! Could take me weeks! But I'll try.

Picking one (a phrase, not a booger) will be very difficult...

ha! That made my day! Man, that one was HARD!Not only in a different language but a tongue-twister, as well? Five times fast? I can't even say it one time slow!

Awesomely fun, as usual. And I love the extra freebie belch at the end.

I kept it が as a matter of personal preference. I'll ask Tony and see what he thinks.

I'm not sure what part of speech は, が,を and に are..prepositions? They're the hardest thing to learn in a foreign language unless you learn the language while your mind is still soft and malleable.

It's common to drop off the を when speaking informally or typing on a phone. If you're writing something formal or speaking politely you'd keep it. That's my take on it. But I'm no expert.

I love your blog and the new podcast, awesome work! I just wanted to comment on something about this one - I noticed your son says あなたのお風呂に入った水 while you say and translate it as あなたがお風呂に入った水. They're both grammatically correct according to my experience, but it seems most Japanese tend to prefer to use の in this case. Just wondering why you chose to keep it as が. Cheers!

great to hear, and the content is well worth the wait. when i was living in japan last year, the local bookstore in my "countryside" town (tottori city) had only a handful of english language books, so for the first time ever i read the entire harry potter series. absolutely loved it. =)

keep up the great work, rich and tony! we're all waiting for the next podcast. ganbatte!

Hey at least the it was delicious part can be of some use and of course, good morning is easy. I'm studying Japanese and it's great! Rich what do you think are some things I could do so that I learn the language and actually retain it? Tell your son I said he's awesome! Thanks Rich and Tony!

すみません。。。質問がありますけど。
「くすぐる」の意味は「to tickle」ですから、「くすぐたい」の意味が「I want you to tickle」ですね。
だから、「すみません。私のわきをなめないで下さい。くすぐたいので、やめてください。」の英語の意味は「Excuse me. Please don't lick my armpirts. Since I want you to tickle it, please stop.」ですね？

しかし、私は三年しか日本語を習っていませんでしたから、たぶん間違いました。

Tony and Rich,
Best of Luck and have fun.
Now that I am living in Japan forever and raising a family too, I look forward to all your future episodes.

Hey Tony,
Forget your Dad. You should just do this podcast with your friends. You don't need the old man. Learn what you can from the old guy and take over this podcast feed.

Just kidding keep your dad in the flow, he is the smartest man in the world. Really.

Thanks guys!
